Halloween is a major event on the party calendar, and it’s a great time to get everyone involved with some arts and crafts. Making some of your own decorations can really add atmosphere to your Halloween setting, as well as saving you some money – after all, there are costumes, food, games, and trick or treats to plan for too!
You’ll be amazed at the simple yet effective decorations you can make from common household items. But perhaps the best bit about making your own decorations is the fun you can have together, getting creative, and enjoying the anticipation of your spooky spectacular. At PartyWorld, we are experts in all things celebratory – here is our guide to making your own Halloween decorations.
1. Spider webs
This is a really simple idea that even the most craft-phobic can enjoy!
You will need: a couple of black bin liners, a pen that will draw on them, and some scissors.
First, cut the top and bottom off the bin liners, so that you have two separate flat rectangles of material. Keeping them together, trim them into squares. Then fold the squares diagonally in half to make a triangle. Fold the triangle in half again to make a smaller triangle. Fold once more to make a cone shape. Then tape along the open edge to keep it folded. Draw a pattern and cut it out – think the cross beams of a web, with the taped edge as a spine (which you do not cut through). Then, unfold your masterpiece – you will have two black webs! Hang these in your windows or blu-tack them to your walls.
Pair them with: PartyWorld’s extensive spider selection will look great hanging out on your freshly made webs – try our large grey spider alongside a pack of 20 mini black spiders for a really creepy crawly effect!
2. Halloween cup-cake toppers
You will need: lollipop sticks or cocktail sticks, thick paper or card, tape or glue, scissors, crayons or pens, googly eyes and other decorative accessories.
This is a really simple idea to make your food look truly fang-tastic. Draw Halloween-themed motifs on your card – think ghosts for simplicity, or let your imagination roam wild and create some of your own monsters. Stick on googly eyes, add glitter, enjoy colouring in your creations. Carefully cut out your design and tape it to the end of your cocktail or lollipop stick. You can then insert this into the top of your cake. For a real showstopper, try making a double sided decoration – simply fold your card in half and then cut out your shape, so that you have two the same. Decorate both sides, and then glue them together, making sure your lollipop stick is in-between the two pieces. Frightful through 360 degrees!
Pair them with: PartyWorld’s Halloween orange cup cake wraps will ensure your sweet treats look as spooktacular down below as they do up top!
3. Spooky paper chains
Paper chains are one of the simplest yet most effective home decoration crafts. They are also easy to theme for Halloween.
You will need: plenty of paper in your chosen Halloween colours (think orange, red, black, purple). Scissors and maybe a pen or pencil. Glue or tape.
For the easiest paper chains, cut paper into strips and then curve each strip into a ring shape, gluing the ends to make it stay. Link each new strip through the last ring before gluing and watch your chains grow and grow! This is a really lovely craft to enjoy with younger children. If you’re up for more of a challenge, try cutting your paper into linking shapes, such as this amazing spider chain (
Pair them with: PartyWorld’s set of LED pumpkin lights and some colour-coordinated balloons – your ceiling will be looking frightfully good in no time!
4. Pumpkin carving
The original Halloween DIY decoration, this one is an unmissable tradition. Get all your Halloween guests involved!
You will need: PartyWorld’s pumpkin carving set, a pencil for tracing, a tea light candle, and a pumpkin.
To begin, cut the top off your pumpkin and hollow out the insides (reserving this filling for cooking some Halloween themed snacks later on). Then select a design from the stencils inside your pumpkin carving set. You could choose some spooky cats, a bat, or a happy Halloween greeting – perhaps you will even do more than one. Use the stencil to trace the design onto the outside of your pumpkin. Then, being very careful with the sharp tools, get carving! Once you are done, the finishing touch is to put a candle inside, and light up your pumpkin lantern. They look very effective once the light is low – perhaps place one by your front door to greet Halloween party guests, and make a pumpkin carving competition one of your party games.
Pair them with: Make sure you get PartyWorld’s Best Pumpkin Award ribbon, to show your appreciation after all the pumpkin carving effort!
5. Spooky silhouettes
You will need: black card or paper, scissors, pencil. White paper for backing and a frame (optional).
Carefully draw your design on the paper – think about shapes that will work well in silhouette. Perhaps hands ready to grab unwary passers-by, black crows, stunted trees. Once you have drawn your design – being mindful to keep it simple enough – cut it out. If you have a white wall, you could pin them straight up, but a really dramatic extra touch is to find an old frame in a charity shop, paint it black, and then put your silhouette shapes inside it, backed by white paper. This is also necessary if you don’t have a white wall! These silhouettes are so easy to make, but create a classy film noir effect for your Halloween scene.
Pair them with: Add to the grown-up horror vibe with PartyWorld’s Halloween wreath, or accessorize further using more monochrome décor – the PartyWorld lace pumpkin would look perfect.
